A Weekend in The ‘D’

Happy Monday! We had a wonderful weekend hangin’ out in Detroit (better known to some as The “D”)…We went down for the Cocoa Classic 5K on Sunday, but decided to make a nice little weekend trip out of it. We had a great time with our friends Joanne and Travis – and even our other good friends Emily and Ryan made an appearance!

We stayed at the Westin Book Cadillac…what an awesome hotel.  If you’re going to downtown Detroit to stay and need to find a nice place, I highly recommend this hotel.  The staff was super friendly;  the room was spacious and modern; and it’s in this awesome old building where they’ve tried to preserve some of the old-school beauty.

In the lobby bar at the hotel.  And I had a white sangria that was delicious!

We had drinks and appetizers at Michael Symon’s restaurant Roast which is in the Westin Book Cadillac.  This photo was taken about 5 minutes too early to get a shot of Spike Lee who ended up sitting on the other side of Noah! He was in town shooting a new music video with Eminem! Very cool!

This drink – the Dutch Mustang (I might’ve tried to call it the Dirty and/or Dusty Mustang) was absolutely delicious! Vodka, lemon juice, ginger syrup, mint and green chartreuse.  It was light, crisp, a little tangy, and the mint reminded me of a mojito…One of the best cocktails I’ve ever had!

This was the pork belly appetizer we had – so very tender!  Served on top of polenta, with a tangy and delicious pepper relish.

We ended up doing some impromptu bar hopping – this was out 2nd stop of the evening – The Sky Bar.  Definitely not in the sky…as a matter of fact it’s on the ground floor.

Wanted to take Joanne and Travis to Pegasus – an amazing Greek restaurant in Greektown – but there was a 45 minute wait and we were famished.  So we had pizza at Pizzapapalis instead.  Not the best pizza ever, but okay anyway.

Ummmm…we didn’t go here, but the name is interesting anyway…

Gettin’ ready to race!

My dear friend, Emily – one of my original running inspirations – and her husband, Ryan joined us for the 5k.

And we’re done! I originally intended to try for a PR at this race, but that didn’t happen.  I may have overindulged a little on Saturday night and perhaps was not in tip-top shape.  Oh well, we had fun anyway – and isn’t that really what’s important after all?

We did get some pretty cool swag for this race – we got a knit winter hat, a zip hoodie, and the awesome thermal mug picture below as well as tasty treats!  I LOVE rice krispie treats and one of the volunteers was kind enough to hook me up with a couple extra – I might’ve eaten 4 {little} squares 🙂

For lunch on Sunday, before leaving Detroit to head home, we stopped at Slow’s BBQ for lunch.  I’d heard great things about this place for a while now and really wanted to check it out….it certainly did not disappoint.

The apple and sweet sauces were my favorite, but I mixed the spicy with my ketchup and dipped my waffle fries in it. Yummy!

I had the pulled pork plate – it was some of the best I’ve had.  The waffle fries and baked beans I had as my sides were tasty too!  I think I would get cole slaw or potato salad next time though as Noah and Travis got those and they were reported to be quite good as well.  Will definitely keep Slow’s in the Detroit food rotation when we head down in the future for concerts or Tigers games.

And to finish it all off – The Chuck Norris for dessert!  This was super scrumptious! A fudgy brownie topped with espresso ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce. A great way to end an awesome weekend!

And tonight we watched the first episode of the new season of Game of Thrones. That show is amazing – so much action, deception, intrigue and drama! Noah has read all the books and says that it just gets crazier! I can’t imagine! Can’t wait to see what happens next.
